WSL Hall Of Fame: Fara Williams

WSL: The Hall of Fame sees Fara Williams as the first player to be inducted.

The Hall of Fame was set up to honour the 10-year anniversary of the Women’s Super League and has revealed it’s first member: Fara Williams. Williams is currently England’s most capped player with 172 appearances for the team.

The former England International began her youth career at Chelsea in 2001 and then went on to Charlton Athletic. After three years, she signed for Everton where she spent eight years, racking up a total of 122 appearances with 70 goals. Her time at the club saw her become captain and in 2008, she captained the team to win the FA Women’s National League Cup and later won the FA Women’s Cup in 2010.

After her long spell at Everton, she made the move to rivals Liverpool. Williams made 35 appearances and scored nine goals. During her time at the Merseyside club, she won the League title in back-to-back years 2013 and 2014. She spent three years at the club and later left to join Arsenal, where she earned 22 appearances, scoring two goals. Her time at Arsenal saw the team lift the FA Women’s Cup in the 2015-16 season.

With only a short stay at the Gunners, a year later she joined Reading. During her time at the club, she made 67 appearances, scoring 25 goals. Williams became the club’s captain and later Reading became the club that she decided to retire at after a successful career.

Throughout her career, Williams earned herself many individual honours. She picked up The FA Young Player of the Year 2002 whilst at Charlton Athletic and later named FA’s Player’s player of the Year in 2009. Williams continued her individual success earning herself the FA International Player of the Year in 2007 and again in 2009.

Williams had a successful international career with England after making her senior debut at the age of 17 in November 2001. Throughout her international career, Williams became England’s record appearance maker after competing in World Cups and Euro campaigns. She was also selected to be in the 2012 Great Britain Olympic team where the team went undefeated in group stage, winning three out of three matches.

Fara Williams becomes a much-deserved recipient of becoming the first inductee into the Hall of Fame after a very successful career filled with many team and individual awards.
