Lionesses: Wiegman's 24 Player Squad for upcoming World Cup Qualifiers

England’s head coach Sarina Wiegman has named her 24-player squad for the upcoming October World Cup qualifying fixtures against Northern Ireland and Latvia.

Wiegman has recalled Aston Villa goalkeeper Hannah Hampton and Manchester United forward Alessia Russo.

The side are still without key members such as Manchester City trio Steph Houghton, Ellie Roebuck and Lucy Bronze, who have all been kept out due to injury.

Kiera Walsh has returned to the side after missing out on September’s qualifiers due to an injury whilst Arsenal midfielder Jordan Nobbs has been left out.

When asked on Nobbs’ absence, Wiegman explained: “she hasn’t played that many minutes, we keep a very close eye on her.”

“She’s pretty close, she just needs to get more minutes,” the coach added.

Nobbs’s Arsenal team-mate Leah Williamson has been included and captained the England side in their recent fixtures in September.

Racing Louisville’s Ebony Salmon has been left out due to competition for places, however, the young forward has been included in the Under 23s squad.

“She [Salmon] is a young player so is still growing. For me, the others were a step ahead of her.”

The Lionesses have a bundle of experience and talent in the forward department with the inclusion of Ballon D’or nominees Fran Kirby and Ellen White, who have been in great form for their clubs.

White’s inclusion provides her with the opportunity to break Kelly Smith’s record of 46 international goals for England – the forward is three short but could break the record when facing Northern Ireland and Latvia.

The Lionesses started off their World Cup qualifiers positively with two dominant displays after beating North Macedonia 8-0, followed by a strong 10-0 win against Luxembourg.

A big opportunity arises this time around as Wiegman’s side face at a strong Northern Ireland side at the home of English football – Wembley Stadium.

“We are incredibly excited to play our first fixture at Wembley Stadium”

“The prospect of playing in front of thousands of fans at our national stadium later this month will be a special moment,” explained the Head coach.

The England side will host Northern Ireland at Wembley on Saturday, October 23 at 17:15 GMT.
