Match Report: England hit 10 past Latvia as they maintain their 100%-win record

Manchester United’s Ella Toone scored a hat-trick as the Lionesses put 10 past Latvia in the Women’s World Cup qualifier.

The striker opened the scoring with two goals in four minutes after being unmarked twice in the box, with both first time strikes hitting the back of the net.

Ellen White scored the third to become the joint second overall goal scorer for the Lionesses after Toone’s well-weighted pass met the feet of the Manchester City striker.

Chelsea’s Millie Bright struck the fourth after her run into the box was unmarked, allowing her to slot home the cross at the back post.

The fifth goal came just 10 minutes into the second half as Arsenal’s Beth Mead fired her shot across the keeper, into the far corner.

Toone finished off her hat-trick in the 68th minute with a perfectly angled strike at the near post, beating Latvia’s Enija-Anna Vaivode.

"I'm delighted I managed to get the hat-trick. It's been a special night and a very proud moment for me and my family.”

The inform Mead set up the seventh as she passed the ball across the face of goal into the feet of Houston Dash’s Rachel Daly.

Seven became eight and nine after captain Leah Williamson guided her shot into the far corner before Georgia Stanway weaved through the defence, placing her strike into the goal.

The 10th goal came moments after Stanway’s strike as Mead’s cross was met by Daly and taken around the keeper, leaving her with an open goal to place the ball into.

The Lionesses could have converted more, having 21 shots on target and had a chance at an 11th before Vaivode got a strong hand behind White’s penalty strike, keeping the ball out of the net.

Speaking after the game, England coach Sarina Wiegman displayed her praise for the young United striker, Toone.

I don't know how good she will become - that's up to her. But she's really talented, that's obvious. I'm very happy she got this hat-trick."

Despite the 10 goals, Wiegman was still critical of her side, demanding more, showing her determination to always improve.

"10-0 is pretty nice to have on your birthday so thanks to the squad. Sometimes we were a little sloppy and sometimes we need to be tighter on the ball.

"I've learnt a lot. There is lots of willingness, lots of quality and depth. We can play high-tempo, a possession-game and move the ball to switch the field.”

Despite conceding 10, Latvia’s goalkeeper, Vaivode, provided her side with a good performance after saving her side from embarrassment after making 11 saves, including the penalty save.

However, Chelsea head coach Emma Hayes demanded more from FIFA and UEFA after she felt that the game was not a positive advert for women’s football.

"UEFA needs to invest more in the smaller nations and grow the game worldwide.

" We don't want to be watching games which are cricket scores. A team like Latvia needs more funding, more support, probably a better calendar schedule.

"Latvia have defended for their lives in the second half as best as they can. It's all about what FIFA and UEFA can do to divert funds to grow countries like Latvia and their leagues.

"Maybe have something like the Nations League in the men's game - something needs to be done - 10-0 games are not good for the game."

England continue to lead their group with their 100%-record and are yet to concede, having scored 32 whilst Latvia are still looking for their first point.

The Lionesses now return to their clubs with their next international fixture coming up on November, 27 where they’ll face second place Austria at the Stadium of Light.
